Near the end of the The Wiz, the Wiz himself sings a song called “Believe in Yourself.” The lyrics open with the lines:
If you believe
Within your heart you’ll know
That no one can change
The path that you must go
The Upper School musical is both a time-honored tradition and an incredible growth opportunity for our students. The 7th, 8th, and 9th graders learn a lot about staging, singing, blocking, and musicality. Yet, more than the obvious lessons they take away from such an experience, they come away with so much more. They learn to listen to their fellow actors and to be “in the moment.” They learn to overcome fears, to dare greatly, and to push themselves further than they ever thought they could go.
It is no wonder that so many alumni come back every year to see the show. The memories they share about their time on the stage, whether in the old Locke Center or the new Performing Arts Center, are so powerful that for some it becomes one of their defining experiences at Country Day. For so many, it was the Upper School musical that gave that emerging adolescent the ability for the first time to believe in themselves!

Headlines will take a two-week hiatus as we head off for Spring Break. This break will hopefully signal the end of our long cold winter, provide a change for everyone to recharge their batteries, and prepare for the final push toward June! I hope you and your family have a great time.
